Children like to move

Even when they sit. This is why a good highchair offers the child support as well as freedom to move - both while sitting at the table and climbing in and out of the chair.

Nomi was developed from an ambition to create the world's best highchair for children, in terms of both form and function. Nomi is seamlessly adjusted without tools and will evolve with your child's changing need for support at the family table. The soft, organic contours are pleasing to the eye and invite the child to stay active and mobile in many different sitting positions.

Nomi Baby provides a safe spot for your newborn family member from day one. It is quickly and seamlessly adjusted between almost horizontal and more upright positions.

Nomi - Next generation highchair

Nomi Highchair is the core of the Nomi concept (see image below). It will fit your child from approx. 2 years and into the teenage years. You can combine your Nomi Highchair with add-ons to customise it for your growing child - right from your baby's first day.

Nomi Baby is perfect for your newborn baby until approx. 6 months. It is secured directly onto the wooden stem and replaced by the seat, back support and footrest, when you child is ready to sit upright.

Nomi Mini is a restraint for children between approx. 6 - 24 months. It is easily fastened on the seat and back - and simply removed when your child no longer needs the extra support and climbs in and out of the chair without help.

The wooden stem provides strength, durability and flexibility to the highchair. The unique shape ensures that the sitting height and depth are always perfectly matched.

The stem is made from steam-bent veneer providing maximum strength and flexibility. When you adjust the height of the seat and footrest, the depth is automatically aligned thanks to the unique shape of the stem.

The stems are natural products and each stem is unique in its marks and character, depending on where the tree has grown and how old it is. A certain tolerance must therefore be expected between a new contrary a used chair in terms of wear, tear and patina regarding colour and shine of the tree.

The stem is available in different types of wood and colours. The difference is purely visual: durability and performance is exactly the same in all options.

Basic stem: A core of steam-bent beech veneer covered with oak veneer. Treated with white oil or black varnish.

Premium stem: Steam-bent oak veneer treated with natural oil. Or steam-bent walnut veneer treated with natural oil.

Nomi Baby - at the centre of the family

Nomi Baby is designed to provide your baby with a soft and cosy spot at the centre of the family. The raised height is ideal for "talking", playing, feeding and keeping good eye contact with your baby.

Nomi Baby is easy to move around the house, wherever you need an extra hand - and it is seamlessly adjusted between almost horizontal and more upright positions to match the changing needs of your baby. It is nicely bouncy while your baby's head remains stable. Nomi Baby's design and soft mattress create the cosiest nest for your new baby.

When your baby has grown a little stronger, you can begin to use a more upright position. This will give even better eye contact at the family table - and if your little one decides to suddenly take a nap, the chair is easily returned to almost horizontal position. Please note that several short periods in Nomi Baby are better for your baby than one extended period.

Mini Restraint - holding you tight

When your child is ready to sit upright, it is time to attach the Nomi Mini restraint to Nomi Highchair.

Nomi Mini is like a safe arm around your child when learning to sit unassisted at the table. Nomi Mini complies with the new and stricter safety requirements while offering comfortable support all the way around your child - and still allowing free movement.

Nomi Mini is easy to attach. It simply clicks on, first underneath the seat and then on the backrest. The leg gaps are designed for maximum safety, complying with the new EN safety standards. The rounded, organic contours create a comfortable highchair with unrestricted movement- and no doubt your toddler will be busy exploring, tasting and gesturing at the family table.

The small wheels on the rear legs of the chair are a unique safety feature reducing the risk of tilting, in case your child pushes backwards from the table. Please note that young children always need adult supervision.

When your child is ready to climb up and down from the chair without help, it is time to remove Nomi Mini.

NOTE! Always check that the restraint is attached properly to the backrest and seat by pulling it in the opposite direction, before using it.

Seamless adjustment - turn, move, tighten

Nomi is very easy to adjust in order to match the changing needs of your child - from infant to teenager. Seamlessly and without tools.

You can adjust the seat and footrest by turning a knob, which is easily loosened and tightened by hand. This means that you can quickly adjust Nomi to match the changing needs of your child - or to fit visiting children or grandchildren of varying ages. The conical shape of the stem provides added safety as it prevents the seat and footrest from sliding, in case you forget to tighten the knob.

Nomi should be adjusted to match the height of your child and table. Start by positioning the seat so that your child's elbows are level on the table; then adjust the footrest so that the thighs are level and the feet resting flat. The design of the stem ensures that the depth of the seat and footrest are always correct.

A solid footplate is the foundation for all movement and healthy motoric development.

Nomi Baby is also adjusted seamlessly and without tools from almost horizontal to more upright positions.

*EN standards are European safety norms. They include testing of durability, function and stability. It has also been verified that there are no holes or gaps in which the child can get caught or stuck. The newest norm from 2012 focuses particularly on the restraint and the design of the holes and gaps. Durability and weight load have also been tested. Nomi is also approved for adults with a durability test corresponding to 10 years' use.

Growing up - flexibility matters

Ready to grow

Your child's motoric skills are constantly evolving - and the results are greater competences, needs and independence. Nomi provides support for every stage of your child's development - from newborn to teenager.

Peter Opsvik has more than 40 years of experience designing chairs for children. Nomi's design is based on his philosophy that children need a safe and stable platform from which to move while they sit. Nomi's footrest, seat and back provide support in many different positions, so that the child can sit actively with free mobility - thus encouraging the child's development.

Include your baby around the family table

During your baby's first months the muscles are not strong enough to support upright sitting. It is recommended for the child to frequently lie on a flat surface with free mobility. Nomi Baby is the perfect choice when you need an extra hand. It lifts your baby from the floor - with dust, feet or paws - and includes your newcomer at the family table right from the start.

Your baby wants to sit

When your child is around 6-9 months old, time has come to sit unassisted. At this point your baby is probably able to roll over from the stomach to crawling position - and from there to sitting. Simply replace Nomi Baby with the seat, back- and footrest of Nomi Highchair combined with the Nomi Mini restraint. Nomi Mini will provide support and freedom to move - the best foundation for developing your child's motoric skills.

Your child moves on

When your child makes attempts to climb up and down from the chair, it's time to remove the restraint. Watch your child in the chair, and offer a little help getting up and down. After a while your child will be able to use Nomi Highchair without your help. Nomi Highchair is designed to stimulate movement and provide safe support in many different positions. Including the imaginative. Movement strengthens your child's motoric skills and learning capacity - and prevents passive sitting habits in the future.

For children and others who won't sit still

Nomi was developed for children but also provides a comfortable, light chair for adults who like to stay active. Nomi can follow your child beyond childhood - for instance as a flexible desk chair.

The parent-friendly highchair

Nomi is also good news for parents. The light highchair weighs just 5 kg, making it easy to move around the house. Or to hang on a table edge while cleaning. The small rubber knobs underneath the seat prevent it from scratching the table. And finally, Nomi is quick and easy to clean using a damp cloth.

The designer

Designed by Peter Opsvik

When Peter Opsvik is joined by his grandchildren he often uses the floor as a playground, providing lots of space for play and movement. This also characterises the designer's chairs. For decades his chairs have inspired people all over the world, children as well as adults, to move and remain active while sitting. Peter Opsvik is convinced that people need the possibility to vary their positions and be active while they sit. It is the same philosophy that underpins Nomi's design.

In 2014 Nomi was awarded the internationally recognised design prize:
Red Dot Award: Best of the Best. The jury's motivations:

»In the world of children's furniture, Nomi is an exception. The simplicity and aesthetic appeal of this high chair are impressive. It demonstrates a completely new use of form, free of the usual clichés of shape. Based on a well thought-out functional concept, this chair is easy to adjust and grows along with the children. In addition to its thorough flexibility it also offers a high level of safety

Peter Opsvik has designed Nomi  - and numerous other classic chairs that are currently used in offices, living rooms and kindergartens around the world. During the past decade he has received several Nordic and international design awards for his sitting solutions for children and adults. More than anyone, this Norwegian designer has reflected upon the way humans sit. So that the human body becomes the core of good design and we can better unite our sitting lifestyle with our active bodies.

Adults need chairs that move in order to inspire movement and different sitting positions. Children on the other hand, need stable chairs. Peter Opsvik compares children with rubber balls - a rubber ball bounces better from a firm foundation.

Nomi is the result of more than 40 years of work with children's chairs. Peter Opsvik has designed Nomi from the philosophy that children need a stable platform from which to move - a platform that inspires many different positions, so the child will sit actively and varied.

Peter Opsvik (1939) graduated as industrial designer from Bergen National Academy of Arts and Statens Håndverks- og Kunstindustriskole in Norway. Since 1970 he has been working as a freelance designer in Oslo.

As a furniture maker he is very conscious about our planet. His designs are developed with love and respect for the surrounding world. It is important to him to reduce the footprint left on the environment.
